Information you should know about Overdrafts, Overdraft Fees and Overdraft Protection.
What is an Overdraft?
An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but Ameris Bank pays it anyway. Ameris Bank can cover your overdrafts one of two ways:
- We utilize our standard overdraft practices or
- We also offer overdraft protection plans, such as:

a. A link to another Ameris Bank account
b. Personal Reserve Account (PRA)
c. Courtesy Coverage Overdraft Protection Plans
What are the Standard Overdraft Practices that come with my account?
Ameris Bank pays overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined. Ameris Bank has the option to authorize and pay an overdraft on checks, other transactions made using your checking account number and automatic bill payments. Unless you ask us to, Ameris Bank will not authorize and pay overdrafts for ATM transactions and everyday debit card transactions.
If Ameris Bank pays my overdraft, what fees will I be charged?
Under our Standard Overdraft Practices, Ameris Bank will charge you a fee of $35 each time we pay an overdraft. There is no limit on the total fees we can charge you for overdrawing your account.
How do I let Ameris Bank know that I would like Ameris Bank to authorize and pay overdrafts on ATM and everyday debit card transactions?
If you want Ameris Bank to authorize and pay overdrafts on ATM and everyday debit card transactions, please call 1.866.616.6020 or write Ameris Bank, Attn: Deposit Services, P.O. Box 3668; Moultrie, GA 31776-3664 to notify Ameris Bank of your preference. You can change your preference at any time. To change your status you may do one of the following: speak with your Personal Banker, send written notification to Ameris Bank - Deposit Services, P.O. Box 3668, Moultrie, GA 31776-3664 or call our Customer Call Center at 1.866.616.6020 Monday - Friday 8:00AM/EST - 5:00PM/EST. Upon receiving notice of your change in preference, Ameris Bank will mail you a confirmation letter.
